Sen. Roberts' TV Ad Slams Slattery

Associated Press
July 10, 2008

Republican Sen. Pat Roberts is airing the first negative television ad in his re-election campaign against Democratic opponent Jim Slattery.

The 30-second spot began running today in the Wichita and Topeka markets. It criticizes Slattery for earning millions working as a Washington lobbyist.

Slattery represented the Topeka area in Congress until 1996, when he began working for a Washington law firm.

Moore Staffers Used Office E-mail For Slattery

On several occasions this spring, staff members in the office of Rep. Dennis Moore (D-Kan.) used their House e-mail accounts to circulate political information about the Senate campaign of former Rep. Jim Slattery (D-Kan.) in violation of House rules and, potentially, federal law.

In one case, a Moore staffer sent an e-mail urging recipients to "get out your checkbooks," which would appear to violate a criminal statute prohibiting soliciting federal employees for campaign contributions.

Lobbyist Defends Work In Run For Senate

The revolving door between former members of Congress and lucrative lobbying firms usually leads one way. But Jim Slattery is trying to make a U-turn.

After spending more than a decade in Washington making millions of dollars at one of the nation's most prestigious law firms, the former Democratic congressman from Topeka is jumping back into the political arena in a bid to unseat Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan.

Roberts' campaign has already gone after Slattery with radio ads calling him a "Gucci loafers and all" lobbyist who's out of touch with voters.

Slattery, who left Congress after getting trounced in the 1994 Kansas governor's race, says he's proud of his private sector work and claims he never lobbied for a position inconsistent with his record in the House. He says most of his income has come from working as a lawyer, not as a "big-time lobbyist."

"I never took on a client or a cause that I did not believe in," Slattery, 59, said in an interview.

No Honeymoon For Senate Race

Even as Democrat Jim Slattery was launching his campaign against Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., the latter went on the air with a negative radio ad calling Slattery a "real liberal" and "a Washington lobbyist . . . Gucci loafers and all." Roberts also had a campaign staffer show up at Slattery's Topeka kickoff to present the challenger with a change-of-address form. "Welcome to Kansas," Ashley McManus told Slattery. ...

Meanwhile, the Kansas Republican Party also is wasting no time trying to define Slattery. Check out this JibJab-type animated video that paints Slattery as a Washington lobbyist, failed candidate and "opportunist."
